As you may have heard on the news last week, Target Stores suffered a significant card data breach beginning the week of Thanksgiving that affected nearly 40 million credit and debit cardholders.  The unauthorized access is most likely to have impacted shoppers who made credit or debit card purchases in U.S. Target stores between November 27 and December 15, 2013.  Information exposed as a result of this breach includes:  customer name, credit or debit card number, and the card’s expiration date and CVV (the three-digit security code) – sufficient information for fraudsters to make unauthorized purchases or create counterfeit cards. The Fund  is pleased to announce a $2,500 grant to the Inter-Lakes Day Care Center and Nursery School. We are pleased to announce the December Book of the Month Program selections! Each year, MVSB donates funds to allow local libraries to purchase and promote new books. The MVSB Book of the Month program seeks to foster the joy of reading and learning for people of all ages. Participating libraries each receive an annual $500 donation to purchase two or more books each month to be displayed on their shelves as the MVSB Books of the Month. MVSB recently provided critical support to the Laconia Area Community Land Trust (LACLT) to upgrade its properties by purchasing $40,000 in tax credits from the nonprofit. New Hampshire’s Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA) recently awarded LACLT $500,000 in tax credits to sell to businesses.  Proceeds from the sales will be used to upgrade 60 units of LACLT’s permanently affordable rental housing, many of which are showing significant wear and tear. “MVSB’s relationship with the Laconia Area Community Land Trust has grown naturally out of our common commitment to community development and financial education,” said Sam Laverack, President & CEO.  “We are […]

According to bankrate.com’s checking account survey, 2013 marked the 15th consecutive year of rising overdraft charges assessed to consumers at national financial institutions. The FBI has issued an alert regarding a growing account takeover email scam targeting businesses.  To perpetrate this scam, fraudsters are intercepting unencrypted emails between businesses and their vendors or suppliers. Once intercepted, the man-in-the-middle poses as the vendor/supplier in an attempt to re-route payment for products or services. The business will receive an email from the phony “supplier” stating that the bank account information normally used is no longer valid and provides updated account information.  The unsuspecting business owner then re-directs payment to the account information provided by the fraudster. As the holidays approach, were are looking to the community for help in keeping local residents warm this winter by participating in our annual Mitten Tree program. The Mitten Tree program begins the day after Thanksgiving and continues through December 21.  Donations of handmade or purchased mittens, gloves, hats and scarves can be dropped off at any MVSB office.  Donated items will be displayed on a holiday tree in the lobby of each branch before being distributed to members of the community who need them. Various organizations, schools and individuals help to distribute the donated items after the first of the year. […]
