WOW Trail Tax Credit Support
MVSB recently purchased $5,000 in tax credits through the Community Development Investment Program (CDIP) in support of the WOW Trail in Laconia. In addition to this contribution, the Bank also served as a Festival sponsor for the Trail’s recent “WOW Fest” fundraiser and several MVSB employees participated in the festival’s events. “We are so thankful for this generous contribution from MVSB,” said Gretchen Gandini, Executive Director for the WOW Trail. “Tax credits are an important part of our fundraising efforts and make it possible for us to continue to expand and maintain this important recreational resource for the Lakes Region.” Contributions […]

For people considering the purchase of their first home or anyone interested in learning about the home buying process, HOMEteam Education and Resources will be offering a first-time homebuyer seminar. HOMEteam is able to present this educational program free of charge thanks to the generous support of Meredith Village Savings Bank. We are excited to launch a three-month arts-themed Facebook contest, during which community members will have the opportunity to vote for a local school district to win a $3000 arts grant and enter to win one of five $250 Ticketmaster™ gift card for themselves. Over the summer, the Bank reached out to local school administrators and asked how they could benefit from an additional $3000 in arts resources. Upcoming Small Business Seminar Series’ in Laconia and Plymouth
A series of small business seminars in Laconia and Plymouth will begin in early October. Each series includes eight (8) two-hour seminars aimed at small business owners who wish to build and grow their businesses. The series is being managed by the Enterprise Center at Plymouth and sponsored by MVSB. The seminars will be taught by Plymouth State University professors, area professionals and counselors for NH Small Business Development. The MVSB Fund is accepting grant applications through October 15, 2014. Established in 1997, the MVSB Fund awards grants annually to local nonprofits that make a significant impact upon the communities the bank serves. Since its inception, 248 grants totaling more than $971,922 have been awarded to a wide range of environmental, social, educational, and historic projects throughout the Lakes Region and Plymouth areas. Over the years, the Fund has supported literacy programs, after-school programs, environmental monitoring and education, restoration of historic structures, organizations that provide support for individuals and families in challenging circumstances, and equipment that helps save lives. Industry experts and news sources have reported that Home Depot may have fallen victim to a data breach and that sensitive information such as debit and credit card numbers may have been targeted. These sources also state that, while Home Depot has not confirmed the data breach, all paths regarding a common point of purchase lead back to Home Depot and that all of their stores could be affected. Charlie Gorhan Retires; Dan Osetek Joins as Commercial Lender
After 5 years of dedicated service to Meredith Village Savings Bank (MVSB), Charlie Gorhan, Senior Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer will be retiring in early September. Charlie joined MVSB in 2009 following a hiatus from a near 30-year banking career. During this time, he owned and operated a business in the Plymouth area. Charlie began his career in banking as a bank auditor and later transitioned to commercial lending, working at a variety of New Hampshire banks, including Concord Savings Bank, Pemigewasset National Bank and Northway Bank. “Backoff” Virus Causes Increase in Credit/Debit Card Data Theft
On July 31, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning to US businesses about the newly discovered “Backoff” virus targeting merchant card processing systems. It is estimated that more than 1,000 US businesses have already had their systems infected by the virus, which exploits businesses’ administrator accounts through remote-access software with the goal of stealing consumer debit and credit card information. Data breaches can be extremely damaging to a business’ reputation and put consumers’ personal and account information at risk for fraud.
