We are deeply saddened to share that Clarence Howard “Larry” Thorne, Former President and Chairman of the Board for Meredith Village Savings Bank, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2015 after a brief illness. He was 94.
A compassionate and hands-on leader, Thorne served the Bank for 31 years. During his tenure, he guided the institution through many milestones, including the celebration of its 100th Anniversary, the opening of its third branch in Center Harbor, and the addition of many new technologies, such as ATM Cards and Machines. Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him at MVSB and our thoughts go out to his many family members and friends as we together mourn this tremendous loss.
Born in Patten, ME, on March 24, 1920, Clarence Howard “Larry” Thorne was the son of Clarence and Martha (Evangeline) Thorne. Larry was raised in Island Falls, ME, and attended local schools, graduating from the Island Falls High School. He furthered his education at the Maine School of Commerce (now Husson University) and the School of Banking at Williams College.
In 1942, Larry enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served his country with honor and courage in WWII.
Larry had a robust working career; he was the Assistant Treasurer of the Katahdin Trust Co., in Patten, ME, he relocated to Meredith in 1959 to be the Treasurer and Vice President of the Meredith Trust Co. and Meredith Savings Bank, in 1966 he became President of both banks. In 1982 Larry became the Chairman of the Board of the Meredith Village Savings Bank.
Larry was a member of the Inter-Lakes School Board; he served as President of the Rotary Club, as well as serving as a Trustee of both the Taylor Home, in Laconia, and the Lakes Region General Hospital.
In 1990 Larry married Marjorie L. Burrows and together they enjoyed extensive travel throughout the U.S. and Europe. Larry was an avid golfer in New Hampshire and Florida; he enjoyed reading and spending time with his family. Larry, Marjorie, and their children enjoyed many family cruises to the Caribbean. Larry was a communicant of St. Charles-Borromeo Catholic Church and he also attended services at the Moultonborough United Methodist Church. He will be remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Thorne, who passed away in the late ‘80’s.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of twenty-five years, Marjorie L. (Nelson) Thorne, of Meredith; daughter, Andrea Thorne, of NYC, NY; step-son, Jon Burrows and his wife Darlene, of Moultonborough; sister, Joanne Whittemore and her husband Don, of FL; three grandchildren, Cori-lynn Hughes and her husband Juan, of Sykesville, MD, Chad Burrows, of Moultonborough, David Burrows and his wife Amy, of Moultonborough; four great-grandchildren, Brooke, Jordan, Jon, and Addison. Larry is also survived by his one niece and four nephews (and their families) whom he was very close to.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry’s memory to the LRGH Auxiliary, Lakes Region General Hospital, 80 Highland St., Laconia, 03246.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Charles-Borromeo Catholic Church, 300 NH Route 25, Meredith, on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. The Very Rev. Richard Thompson, V.F., will be the celebrant. A spring interment will be held in the St. Agnes Cemetery, Island Falls, Maine, at a later date and will be private.
