Area residents are reporting an increase in fraudulent credit card interest rate reduction phone calls. According to these reports, the calls appear to be from a local number. Upon answering, a recording is played stating that it is a “final attempt at reaching you. We have been attempting to reach you regarding lowering the interest rate on your credit card. To speak with a representative, press one. To decline, press two.” If option one is pressed, the call recipient is transferred to a representative who offers assistance resolving credit card debt. A local craft group based out of the Wesley Woods Senior Living Community in Gilford has donated hundreds of hand-knit mittens, scarves and hats to the Laconia office of Meredith Village Savings Bank (MVSB) on 379 South Main Street. The group, who anticipates giving to the MVSB Mitten Tree Drive each year, begins knitting mittens, scarves and hats as early as January. Meredith Village Savings Bank (MVSB) has opened its 12th office location in Melvin Village, next to the town Post Office. Robyn Masteller, Regional Vice President, Eastern Region for MVSB, oversees the new office, located  at 448 Governor John Wentworth Highway. Meredith Village Savings Bank recently purchased $27,500 in tax credits from Laconia Area Community Land Trust (LACLT) through the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority’s (CDFA) tax credit program. With colder weather moving in and the holidays fast approaching; MVSB will once again collect mittens, hats, gloves and scarves for its annual Mitten Tree drive, a holiday tradition since 1979. MVSB will donate $2 to the NH Food Bank for every article collected through December 17.  The Bank hopes to reach or exceed the results of the 2015 Mitten Tree Program with contributions of $4,004 to local non-profit organizations. Meredith Village Savings Bank has committed to a $350,000 donation to the Belknap Economic Development Council (EDC) for the Colonial Theater Redevelopment Project in Laconia.
