The Belknap County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public of a scam that is recirculating this year. It has been reported that fraudsters are calling local individuals pretending to be someone from the Belknap County Sheriff’s Department attempting to con victims into providing sensitive account information over the phone.
Belknap County has received complaints from residents stating that a fraudster posing as an employee with Belknap County Sheriff’s Department calls and tells them they owe fees or that there is a warrant out for their arrest for failing to show for jury duty. It is likely that the fraudster is attempting to collect account information/debit card information to “pay for the fee.”
Belknap County has confirmed that these phone calls are not legitimate, they are NOT calling people for failing to appear for jury duty or looking to collect any of type fee in lieu of or to vacate a warrant. If you should receive a phone call of this nature, it is recommended to hang up and report the incident to your local police department. If there are ever any questions on a judicial matter you should contact the Sheriff’s Department directly.
